ICAN Law School is in session!

On 28 October, ICAN kicked off its “Instagram Law School” welcoming friends of the campaign to explain the legal implications of the imminent entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and provide an overview of international law and international humanitarian law.

Class one with Treasa Dunworth from University of Auckland and ICAN's Treaty Coordinator Tim Wright provided a clear overview of the obligations and prohibitions in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

A second session with Magnus Lovold and Alicia Sanders-Zakre explored international humanitarian law and the role of the International Committee of the Red Cross and how it all connects back to the TPNW.

Susi Synder and Erin Hunt talked about norms and how international law can impact even those countries that have not joined international treaties.

Finally, Bonnie Docherty, Associate Director of Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection and a Lecturer on Law at the International Human Rights Clinic, explained what humanitarian disarmament treaties and positive obligations are and answered questions about the effect of the treaty on nuclear armed states.

Didn’t make it class? Don’t worry, all of the videos are available on ICAN's instagram (@nuclearban) on IGTV and you can even test your knowledge through the highlights in our stories.
