Intersessional Progress on the TPNW

At the First Meeting of States Parties (1MSP) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, states-parties adopted the Vienna Action Plan, with 50 concrete and progressive actions to implement the treaty and work towards a world free of nuclear weapons. The Vienna Action Plan created three informal working groups to take forward actions related to Articles 4, 6 and 7 and 12 of the treaty (on nuclear disarmament verification, victim assistance, environmental remediation and international cooperation and assistance, and universalisation), as well as focal points or facilitators to advance actions on gender and complementarity of the TPNW with other instruments. The Vienna Action also commits states to appoint national focal or contact points for work on Articles 4, 6 and 7 and 12.

At the Second Meeting of States Parties (2MSP), states parties, signatories and other observers engaged in an interactive debate and reviewed the substantial progress to implement the treaty since 1MSP.  They adopted a series of decisions which will advance the work of implementing the Treaty in the next intersessional period. Among these decisions, states re-committed to the intersessional structure of the informal working groups and thematic facilitators and focal points. They also agreed to launch a new consultative process to articulate the legitimate security concerns, highlight the risks and consequences posed by nuclear weapons, and challenge the security paradigm based on nuclear deterrence.

This website provides an overview of the work in each of these key areas in the Vienna Action Plan to take forward treaty implementation in the intersessional periods between meetings of states parties.
