Help us get ready for Vienna
In January 2021, we made history with the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons' entry into force. But if you thought ICAN would slow down after that, think again. We're getting ready for the exciting next phase: the first Meeting of States Parties, taking place in Vienna in 2022! Will you help us?
Since January, ICAN campaigners have been working hard to get more countries on board and strengthen the stigma around these weapons of mass destruction ahead of the next big milestone. The first Meeting of States Parties will be the first time that these states come together to discuss the treaty's progress and iron out technical details and next steps. Civil society needs to be there, keeping up the pressure and pushing for the strongest possible commitments.
"This is when we start turning the new law into a strong norm. Vienna 2022 will set the tone and pace of global nuclear disarmament work, and be another significant milestone in our efforts to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons."
- Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director ICAN
ICAN will be in Vienna both as the civil society coordinator for the government conference and to organise activities around the meeting. While the current pandemic makes planning a challenge, participating governments and the UN are currently working out the logistics, and ICAN is committed to ensuring that civil society, and particularly for representatives of impacted communities, are given ample chance to participate in this meeting. Whether it's through participative online experiences or by sponsoring participants directly, we want to make sure the citizens can have their voices heard too.
This meeting is a key opportunity for the states parties to commit to implement obligations that make this treaty unique, like providing assistance to victims of nuclear weapon use and testing, beginning to remediate contaminated environments and universalising the treaty. Will you help ICAN make sure that happens?
What is ICAN?
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a global movement of 620 civil society organisations in 106 countries comprised of hundreds of thousands of individuals who campaign to make nuclear weapons illegal under international law. Since 2007, ICAN has been organising, strategising and campaigning to rid the world of nuclear weapons once and for all. In 2017 we won the Nobel Peace Prize for our role in raising awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and in achieving the adoption of the TPNW. Ever since, ICAN campaigners all around the world have been working non-stop to get enough countries on board for the treaty to enter into force. We reached that 50-state milestone in October 2020, and celebrated the treaty's entry into force on 22 January 2021.
Together, we made the ban on nuclear weapons a reality. Now we are doubling down to make sure the TPNW is as impactful as it can be. ICAN is funded through foundations, governments and individuals like you. Every gift, small and large, has a special and important place in enabling us to keep pushing for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
