70 years after Castle Bravo: a legacy of human rights, gender and environmental impacts March 13, 2024 at 9:00pm - 10:30pm Bern | virtual | Contact person: ICAN Virtual event |
As the Marshall Islands commemorates the 70th anniversary of the US detonation of the Castle Bravo nuclear test, about 1,000 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb, the Human Rights Council has mandated a new study on the human rights legacy of nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands. On 4 March, 14 UN experts issued a joint statement urging states to address the human rights legacy of testing. One week after the anniversary of the Castle Bravo test, the world marks International Women’s Day. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) organised this high-level webinar to educate members of the ICAN campaign and the broader public about the lasting human rights legacy, including gendered and environmental impacts, of the Castle Bravo nuclear explosion.
