Nuclear-armed states have long argued that "everyone really wants nuclear weapons," that "nuclear weapons are the 'ultimate weapon', that deterrence is safe and reliable, and that anyone who wants to eliminate nuclear weapons is a foolish idealist, a utopian dreamer, or worse. I'm going to reframe the entire debate and in the process demolish these claims. It turns out there are compelling realist arguments for eliminating nuclear weapons -- arguments that even an immoral dictator would be persuaded by. I'll present those arguments and talk about strategies for working in nuclear-armed states, nuclear-allied states, and any other place where people are sympathetic to keeping nuclear weapons.
