The Role of Strategic Partnership between Faith Actors and ICAN in Universalizing the TPNW for Sustainable Peace, Justice, and Development. November 30, 2023 at 11:00am - 2pm Eastern Time (US & Canada) Church Center for the UN, 8th Floor 777 UN Plaza 8th Floor New York New York , NY 10017 United States Contact person: Lydia Ndinda

Addressing the pressing issue of nuclear threats necessitates a fundamental shift in the prevailing belief system that nuclear deterrence is under control. This transformation involves redefining security foundations and evolving disarmament strategies into robust strategic partnerships. To be effective, we must not only influence governmental policies, but also cultivate political will, raise awareness, and transform cultural and moral perspectives on nuclear weapons.

With their moral authority, faith leaders occupy a pivotal role in this endeavour. Therefore, on the margin of the second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), Religions for Peace and the African Council of Religious Leader-Religions for Peace (ACRL-RfP) are organizing a hybrid event, The Role of Strategic Partnership between Faith Actors and ICAN in Universalizing the TPNW for Sustainable Peace, Justice, and Development, on Thursday, 30 November 2023, at 777 UN Plaza, 8th Floor, New York City.

This side event aims to foster a holistic understanding of how faith communities and ICAN can collaborate to advance the TPNW. Through shared perspectives, dialogue, and collective actions, the meeting will explore the moral and ethical imperatives that underpin the TPNW and its pivotal role in promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development. Furthermore, case studies of successful partnership between faith led institutions and ICAN and their impact on disarmament efforts will be highlighted, emphasizing the shared commitment to a nuclear-free world rooted in compassion, peace, human dignity, and shared well-being.

Of the many topics, speakers will delve into the correlation of interfaith mechanisms and nuclear disarmament advocacy, exploring the means through which faith actors and ICAN can align their efforts in universalizing the TPNW, with the ultimate aim of promoting sustainable peace, justice, and development. Through topical panel discussions and an interactive Q&A session, participants will gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with forging strategic partnerships in the universalization of the TPNW.
