Is the United States' MOAB - Massive Ordnance Air Blast – bomb a nuclear weapon?
Answer
No. The US MOAB bomb is designed to be hugely destructive, but it is a conventional weapon, not a nuclear weapon.
The largest conventional weapon in the US arsenal, the GBU-43 MOAB, has a destructive force of 11 tons of TNT. By contrast the US B-61 12 nuclear bombs, currently based in Europe, have a yield up to 50 kilotons – that is 50,000 tons of TNT. It also releases powerful ionising radiation that causes death and lingering, intergenerational harm to people.
The US says the yield from the B-61 12 can be set at different levels. The lowest is 0.3 kilotons which is still about 30 times more powerful than the GBU-43 MOAB.
For comparison, the bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima in 1945 had an explosive force of 15 kilotons.
