How have Nuclear-Armed States and Their Allies Advanced the NPT May 06, 2026 at 10:00am - 11:20am Eastern Time (US & Canada) UN Headquarters- Conference Room A 405 E 45th St Conference Room A New York, NY 10017 United States Contact person: ICAN and Pax Christi Flanders
When the NPT was negotiated, the geopolitical stakes couldn't have been higher. Five states had already tested nuclear weapons, stockpiles increased fast and several countries worked actively on developing their own capacities. In that troubling security environment, the treaty was built on a two-sided bargain: non-nuclear-weapon states agreed not to develop nuclear weapons, and the five states that already had exploded them agreed to get rid of theirs.
This session will look at what NPT States parties are doing to advance their commitments under the treaty.
