At noon on January 21, 2022, the Nuclear Free World (NFW) Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the U.N. Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). We will also call on Congress to support U.S. engagement with the treaty. Activists and partners in our religious community will talk about our moral obligation to prevent nuclear catastrophe, and the benefits of shifting nearly $70 billion dollars of annual nuclear weapons spending to pressing needs like health care, education, housing, and climate change. Endorsers of the Back from the Brink Campaign, of which TPNW is the first demand, will be recognized with a token of appreciation.
Speakers will include Michaela Czerkies of the Syracuse Peace Council, Pastor Eric Jackson of Plymouth Congregational Church, Morgan Piersma of Peace Action-Lemoyne College, Joseph Driscoll, Syracuse Common Councilor, and Frieda Jacques. Joseph Nehme, CNY Regional Director for Senator Schumer will receive a signed statement urging the support of our congressional representatives. Representatives of Senator Gillibrand and Congressman John Katko are also invited. Also attending are state, county, and city government officials.
