At the opening of the City of Takoma Park's January 13, City Council meeting, the mayor, Kate Stewart, will read an official proclamation recognizing and celebrating the entry into force of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The City of Takoma Park, Maryland, was one of the first US cities to declare itself a nuclear-free zone, in 1983. In March 2018, Takoma Park became the first US city to declare its compliance with the TPNW after it was adopted at the UN in July 2017.
