Ideas for action to end nuclear weapons

You can help end nuclear weapons. For 80 years, the world has lived under the shadow of nuclear weapons and now, the risk of nuclear weapons use is the highest it has been in decades. But it does not have to be this way. Together, we can take meaningful action to rid the world of these weapons of mass destruction.

Everyone is welcome to join the movement to make nuclear weapons history, sign up here

Engage parliamentarians:

While it may be recess time for many parliaments around 16 July or 6 - 9 August, that doesn’t mean they have vanished from the planet.  Consider inviting current signatories to the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge in your area to speak at a commemoration event. Or, ask new MPs to hold a Parliamentary Pledge signing ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary.

Cities matter!

Nuclear weapons are designed to destroy cities, and cities have a responsibility to protect their citizens, that’s why so many have joined ICAN’s Cities Appeal- or are members of Mayors for Peace (or both!).  These cities can be activated to co-host commemorations for the 80th anniversary-  to highlight the complex, cascading and catastrophic dangers nuclear weapons pose to their citizens, while offering a beacon of hope through their support for the TPNW.

Consider an event with your local Mayor or request a special City Council meeting, a city proclamation noting the historic day, or, ask the city to sponsor an exhibition at the local municipal building to commemorate this historic event.

Art for action

ARTISTS AGAINST THE BOMB is an exhibition of posters that call for universal nuclear disarmament. Each made by a different artist, the group comprises historical and newly commissioned works that detail a cultural history of disarmament movements and evidence the diversity of ways in which artists have expressed the need to ban the bomb. These black and white posters can be freely downloaded and used in exhibitions to illustrate the artivism against nuclear weapons, for example in cooperation with your city council, local museum, or with fellow campaigners and activists.  ICAN partners have held exhibitions in many locations and forms with these posters, and they are a great way to bring attention to the issue and commemorate the 80th.

Mayors for Peace also has a poster exhibition available for cities to use to share the impact of nuclear weapons. Cities that are already part of the Mayors for Peace network can directly download the exhibition through this link, or ICAN partners can also apply their behalf. The posters are available in nine languages.

No Money for Nuclear weapons!

Consider commemorating the 80th with an action at a nuclear weapon producing company or one of the banks that is profiting from the production of these bombs. Leafletting in front of a bank, or setting up a meeting with your branch manager to talk about nuclear weapon profiteering and the need to put a stop to nuclear weapons 80 years after their invention is a good way to commemorate the anniversary. For a list of banks profiting from mass destruction, see Don’t Bank on the Bomb
