Salish Sea Photo Action January 11, 2021 at 12:00am - January 21, 2021 Pacific Time (US & Canada) | virtual | 501 Belleville St Victoria, BC V8V 2L8 Canada Contact person: Mines Action Canada Virtual event | link: https://www.minesactioncanada.org/salishsea_photoaction

The Salish Sea (the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound) is home to one of the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons in the world and nuclear armed submarines frequent the waters putting everything we know and love at risk of a nuclear weapon detonation - accidental or otherwise.

There is hope though, on January 22, 2021 the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will enter into force. For the first time ever, the international community will say nuclear weapons are banned.

Unfortunately, Canada and the United States remain outside the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and they refuse to join the more than 80 states who have signed or ratified the Treaty.

To celebrate the Entry into Force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to remind local decision makers that they need to take action and join the Treaty, join a cross-border photo action with Mines Action CanadaNon-Violence International Canada and Washington Against Nuclear Weapons Coalition

It’s easy!

Step 1: Print a “Nukes are Banned” sign

Step 2: Make your way to your favorite view of the Salish Sea - be it a beach on the Strait of Georgia, a view of Puget Sound or rocks overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Step 3: Take a photo of you and the “Nukes are Banned” sign with the Salish Sea in the background. Hold your camera horizontally for best results.

Step 4: Email your photo to [email protected] with your first name and city by 18 January 2021.

Step 5: Wait while Mines Action Canada, Non-Violence International-Canada and Washington Against Nuclear Weapons Coalition compile all received photos into a large collage image calling on decision makers to protect the Salish Sea by joining the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Step 6: On 22 January, post your picture on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #NuclearBan and your reason for supporting the Ban Treaty using any of these sample social media posts for Canada and the United States and tag @WaAgainstNukes and @MinesActionCan

Step 7: Watch our social media for the compiled image on 22 January and then share widely!

Please note by submitting your photo, you agree that your photo can be included in the collage and shared on our social media platforms.
