The Role of Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones in Latin America and the Caribbean in Advancing the Universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) April 21, 2026 at 1:30pm - 2:30pm Eastern Time (US & Canada) Permanent Mission of Uruguay 633 Third Ave Suite 13H New York, NY 10017 United States

In the framework of the commemoration of the anniversary of the entry into force of the Tlatelolco Treaty (April 25, 1969), the Permanent Mission of Uruguay, in its role as Co-Chair of the Informal Working Group on the Universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), in collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), has the pleasure of inviting you to an in-person side event. This event will focus on exploring how nuclear-weapon-free zones can serve as a vital platform for advancing the universalization of the TPNW.

The TPNW has served not only as an important forum for expressing concerns about nuclear risks but also as a platform to take tangible actions and advance effective disarmament measures aimed at the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. This event aims to underscore the complementary role of Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones (NWFZs) in supporting the objectives of the TPNW, illustrating how regional initiatives contribute to norm-building, foster mutual confidence, and the global push toward disarmament.

Participants will discuss how the universalization and effective implementation of the TPNW can be further supported through the development of NWFZs, fostering a logical convergence between regional initiatives and global disarmament goals. Panelists will also emphasize OPANAL’s role in supporting this process, drawing from their experience to promote the connection between NWFZs and the TPNW as pathways to a world free of nuclear weapons.

Delegations are encouraged to share their experiences, challenges, and strategies for reinforcing NWFZs and supporting the universalization of the TPNW.
