Over the weekend, the United States and Israel dangerously escalated their illegal war of aggression against Iran by bombing the Nantaz nuclear facility that has been used by Iran to enrich uranium.

The two countries had already bombed the site in June last year, along with strikes on two other Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow and Isfahan which President Trump claimed had obliterated Iran’s nuclear programme. Last week, Iran also reported that a projectile landed on the grounds of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which had not been struck during last June's war. This past Saturday, 21 March, Iran’s enrichment plant at Nantaz was attacked again and Iran struck the town of Dimona near Israel’s nuclear research complex with ballistic missiles in retaliation. The Negev Nuclear facility near the town of Dimona is widely believed to have produced plutonium and nuclear warheads for the Israeli nuclear arsenal, and analysts now believe it may be used to produce tritium for Israeli nuclear weapons. The Executive Director of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN, Melissa Parke, called for an end to the fighting before there is a nuclear disaster: “Striking nuclear installations is explicitly banned under international law and risks causing radioactive contamination harmful to human health and the environment. Any attack on or near a nuclear facility is playing roulette with civilian lives. Nuclear risks are not theoretical -- they are immediate and human. The US, Israel and Iran must stop all military action and return to the diplomatic path.” When the US and Israel attacked Iran' s nuclear facilities nine months ago, ICAN pointed out that the use of force by two nuclear-armed countries against a non-nuclear-armed country was not only illegal and reckless, it is also not the way to address concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme because you cannot enforce international law by the use of illegal force. That should be done via diplomacy, and in fact, the mediator in the talks between the US and Iran that were underway at the end of February when the US and Israel launched their latest offensive, the Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, said significant progress was being made towards an agreement. |
