The Meeting of States Parties (MSP) to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) has officially been postponed due to ongoing COVID-19 considerations. New dates will be decided soon.
The first Meeting of States Parties was originally scheduled to take place on March 22-24 in Vienna, but due to ongoing challenges with COVID-19, States Parties began a consultation process on the best dates and formats to proceed with the meeting. In addition to the health concerns, the decision to postpone was also driven by the desire from States Parties to ensure an inclusive meeting, where civil society can partake fully, which would have been far more difficult in a limited and online format.

ICAN supports this choice and welcomes the commitment to maximize in-person representation of civil society. Executive Director Beatrice Fihn: “The TPNW has always been set apart by its inclusiveness. It is vital that the first MSP reflects the global nature of the treaty by enabling the full and effective participation by all States Parties, as well as centering voices of impacted communities and civil society.”
The new dates are expected to be agreed by Member States in the coming weeks; dates in May, June and July are currently under consideration
