ICAN held an international conference in Turkey on 26 January entitled “A World Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction”. It was supported by organizations such as Greenpeace, the Global Peace and Justice Coalition and the Global Action Group for a Mine-Free Turkey.

The conference discussed pathways to a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East and a global ban on nuclear weapons, as well as Turkey’s role in achieving these goals. ICAN Turkey coordinator Arife Köse and Greenpeace Mediterranean Office coordinator Cenk Levi described the purpose of the conference:

“This conference provided participants with information about the effects of nuclear weapons and ideas for promoting a treaty to outlaw and eliminate them. Nuclear weapons are said to provide security, when in fact they are a major threat to humanity and the planet. Currently there are more than 19,000 nuclear weapons in the world. İncirlik air base in Turkey is known to store US nuclear bombs.”
