UK
The United Kingdom is a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and is one of the ‘depositary’ or legal guardians of the NPT. They have signed and ratified the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
There are 23 nuclear power plants in the UK but almost all are shut down because of safety problems or scheduled for decommissioning. The 2007 Energy Review made it clear that Britain wishes that nuclear power continues to play a part in their energy mix.
Britain has approximately 200 nuclear warheads based upon the Trident nuclear submarine system. In December 2007 the UK announced that it intended by the early 2020’s to replace Trident with a new nuclear weapons system.
