In an astonishing article published today in The Guardian, it was revealed that the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston, Berkshire is being used by the US military to research its own nuclear warhead programme.

Anniversary of first British nuclear test

Today marks the anniversary of the first British nuclear bomb test. Operation 'Hurricane' was detonated on Oct 3 1952 off the Monte Bello islands, Western Australia, with an explosive yield of 25 kilotons (the Hiroshima bomb yield was approximately 14 kT).

With the 2010 review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in its sights, a new international nuclear disarmament commission led by two former foreign ministers is scheduled to begin work in October.

ICAN petition: Urge government to abandon Trident
