Letter from the President of Afghanistan

16 November 2012

Dear members of the Hiroshima Youth Committee,

Thank you for your letter dated 6 August 2012. I wholeheartedly support the call to outlaw and eliminate nuclear weapons that the Hiroshima Youth Committee of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons launched on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In 2010, during my visit to your beautiful city, I toured the Peace Memorial. Words fail to convey my horror as I viewed the displays that record the suffering and permanent damage inflicted on the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their cities. The tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki gave warning to mankind of the horror of nuclear weapons.

Afghanistan has always supported calls for a nuclear-free world. We are gravely concerned about the continual stockpiling of nuclear weapons and nuclear proliferation. We join all peace-loving people in their call for a global treaty to outlaw and eliminate these instruments of human destruction. I wish your campaign success.

Yours Sincerely,

Hamid Karzai

President of Afghanistan
