ICAN at the NPT

22 April – 3 May 2013

The ICAN Campaigners Meeting takes place immediately before the Second Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT PrepCom), from 22 April – 3 May 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. This ten-day diplomatic meeting provides an opportunity to build upon the successful outcome of the Oslo conference and continue to inspire, persuade and pressure policy-makers to support a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

In Oslo, Mexico declared its intention to host a conference to continue the discussion of the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. In the period leading up to this conference, ICAN campaigners from all corners of the world will get in touch with their governments and let them know that we will not be satisfied until we have a treaty banning nuclear weapons in place.

In the run-up to and during NPT PrepCom, ICAN will work to make states highlight the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons in their statements, welcome the upcoming conference in Mexico, and call for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Attached below is ICAN’s Advocacy Guide for the NPT PrepCom, which includes advocacy objectives, key messages, and proposed actions.
