Profile: Tilman Ruff

POSITION WITH ICAN: Chair of ICAN Australia and Chair, ICAN Working Group , International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
BACKGROUND:
Tilman Ruff is an infectious diseases and public health physician, with particular commitment to the urgent public health imperative to abolish nuclear weapons, and to vaccines and immunisation. He is Associate Professor in the Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne.
Tilman has been active in the Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia) since 1982 and is past national President.
He also serves on the Board of the Nobel Peace Prize winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and is the current Chair of ICAN Australia. He is an NGO Advisor to the Co-chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.
Tilman has played a leading role in the development of travel medicine; worked extensively on hepatitis B control, immunisation and maternal and child health in Indonesia and Pacific island countries; and was previously regional medical director for a major vaccine manufacturer, directing Australia’s largest clinical vaccine research program. He serves as international medical advisor to Australian Red Cross, and provides technical advice on immunisation for WHO, UNICEF, AusAID and vaccine manufacturers.
CONNECTIONS: Associate Professor Tilman Ruff is a past president of the Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia); member of the Board of Directors of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW Nobel Peace Prize 1985); Australian Management Committee Chair, and IPPNW Working Group Chair, for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. He is one of two invited NGO Advisers to the Co-Chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, and member of a senior group promoting nuclear weapons abolition led by former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser.
