Australia must support US and Russia towards zero nukes

ICAN has welcomed news of the United States and Russia's renewed commitment to reduce their nuclear arsenal through the negotiation of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

ICAN encourages the Australian Government to show strong support for this important step at the upcoming ALP National Conference by reaffirming its commitment to a Nuclear Weapons Convention - a global treaty to abolish nuclear weapons.

ICAN Board member and President of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War, Dr Sue Wareham said:

"The United States and Russia's decision to reduce their nuclear arsenal is an important step in the right direction, however the goal must remain zero nuclear weapons.  As long as some countries have nuclear weapons, others will want them and they can be used.

"Australia has both the ability and responsibility to support the US and Russia towards zero nuclear weapons.   Prime Minister Rudd has already demonstrated Australia's global leadership role on the issue through the establishment of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.

"The next logical step is for the Government to reaffirm its commitment to support early negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention as outlined in the Labor Party's national policy at the upcoming ALP National Conference.  Everyone must play their part in sustaining this welcome momentum towards an end to the threat of nuclear weapons," concluded Dr Wareham.
