ICAN Australia
ICAN Australia was initiated as a project of the Medical Association for Prevention of War following the failure of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in 2005. ICAN was then adopted by the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and officially launched around the world in 2007.
ICAN Australia hosts the international office for ICAN, with several part time paid staff and a range of spokespersons and manages several core projects, including the international website.

What ICAN Australia works for
Advancing a Nuclear Weapons Convention
Australia should lead the global push for a legally binding, verifiable treaty to ban nuclear weapons and ensure their elimination -- a Nuclear Weapons Convention. In particular, it should advocate for the inclusion of a commitment to negotiate such a treaty in the outcome document of the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference.
Adopt a nuclear-weapon-free defence posture
Australia's diplomatic efforts towards nuclear disarmament, some of which are commendable, are compromised by our continued sheltering under the US nuclear umbrella. Rejecting the use of nuclear weapons in our defence will help de-legitimise these illegal weapons and the military policies that support them.
Cease producing and exporting bomb fuel
Australia should terminate its role in the production of nuclear bomb fuel by ceasing uranium mining and export, above all to any nation that has nuclear weapons or is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Launch
ICAN was launched in Australia on 23 April 2007 at a luncheon event at Parliament House, Melbourne, with Judge Christopher Weeramantry, formerly of the International Court of Justice, former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, and Professor Fred Mendelsohn, Director of the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine. Video messages were sent by former Foreign Minister and Weapons of Mass Destruction Commissioner Gareth Evans, Australian actor John Howard and Nobel Laureate Jody Williams.
