This week marks the 62nd anniversary of the nuclear bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a reminder of the horrific capabilities of the worst weapons of terror. Please act this week towards abolishing nuclear weapons before they are used again.

ICAN ACT - things to do this month

  1. Hiroshima Day - be part of events in your area
    • Adelaide: Peace Rally 11am, Saturday 4 August, Parliament House, North Terrace
    • Brisbane: Peace Rally and March, 1pm, Sunday 5 August, Queens Park, Cnr George & Elizabeth Streets
    • Gold Coast: Peace Vigil, BBQ and music from Lorien, 4.30pm, Sunday 5 August, Burleigh Surf Club to walk to headland. Bring candle and BBQ food
    • Hobart: Peace Vigil, 12:30, Monday 6 August, Town Hall Hobart
    • Melbourne: Peace Rally, 12.30pm, Sunday 5th August, State Library. World Music Peace Concert 3pm 5th August, Melbourne Town Hall
    • Sydney: Peace Rally, 12 noon, Sunday 5th August, Hyde Park North
    • Perth: Interfaith Ceremony for Peace: 5.30pm, Monday 6 August, Perth Town Hall, ground floor cnr Hay & Barrack St, Perth
  1. Contact media: Use Hiroshima Day as a catalyst to write a letter to the editor or ring talk back radio
  2. Sign up celebrities to ICAN: A credible face can boost any campaign - if you know any sports people, musicians, artists etc ask us for information to approach them with.
  3. Become a friend of ICAN on Myspace or Facebook - link the ICAN DVD to your site
  4. Listen to Ockham's Razer 8.45am Sunday 5 August. ICAN's Assoc. Prof. Tilman Ruff will be on this Radio National program
  5. Join your organisation with ICAN. ICAN partners commit to building the campaign. Could your union, church, professional group, social group or other become an ICAN partner?
  6. Send the International Atomic Energy Agency a birthday card - challenging their ability to fight nuclear weapons while promoting nuclear power

NUKES IN THE NEWS -

  1. Nuclear power - safe? An earthquake in Japan caused radiation leaks causing much more significant damage than was originally reported. While in Germany a fire caused one reactor to shut down, and another shut down due to safety concerns
  2. Australia's Opal nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights has been shut down for 2 months due to "operational problems" just 11 months after opening
  3. Foreign Minister wants Australia to sell uranium to India - not only a nuclear weapons state but on of the few that will not sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
  4. Pope Benedict XVI - calls for nuclear weapons abolition
  5. Blockades continue at Fasslane Trident base, including the arrest of Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors
