Updates

  1. ICAN has been launched! Many wonderful events have launched the campaign as a diverse, world-wide and inspiring campaign - from concerts in Oslo, lobbying actions in the USA, a luncheon in Melbourne with a former Prime Minister, and our international launch in Vienna as part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) meetings. Speeches, photos and other details are at: www.icanw.org/launch
  2. www.icanw.org is live. It features information and resources, updated and expanded daily. Features include: publications page with e-copies of publications including "Securing our Survival" - the case for a nuclear weapons convention", and order form for hard copies; downloads page includes videos, brochures and posters.
  3. NPT meeting voices support for a Nuclear Weapons Convention. This NPT meeting got off to a shaky start because of procedural wrangling. But there was some positive dialogue in the second week. The highlight was that the Chairman's final speech included the following: "The Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the obligations of nuclear weapon States was recalled and support was voiced for the development of a nuclear weapons convention". For daily reports and other material, see WILPF's Reaching Critical Will website.

Other relevant Campaigns

  1. Japan: Petition in regard to Okinawa US base and environmental impacts.
  2. USA: Students and Alumni go on a hunger strike to protest the University of California's involvement in nuclear weapons research.
  3. Australia: Peace Convergence: Events surrounding the Australian: US joint military training exercises "Operation Talisman Sabre".
