Campaign Successes

  • ICAN was launched by the Nobel Prize-winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) in Vienna at the 2007 meeting of parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
  • National launches have since taken place in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, India, Malaysia, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the USA
  • As ICAN continues political lobbying globally for a Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC), existing networks and organisations have embraced ICAN as a new vehicle to generate global support for a NWC. (See our Partners page)
  • ICAN coordinated the updating and printing of the Model Nuclear Weapons Convention
  • At the 2007 UN General Assembly 127 nations voted in favour of a resolution calling for the immediate commencement of negotiations leading to a NWC. The revised NWC was accepted as a UN document
  • His Holiness The Dalai Lama officially endorsed ICAN internationally
  • Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was the first acting PM to visit Hiroshima and declared his intention to move towards the abolition of nuclear weapons via an International Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Commission
  • This website now attracts more than 10,000 visits per month, and ICAN has made its presence felt on MySpace, Facebook and YouTube (see the links in the left menu)

I CAN, you can, we can abolish nuclear weapons
