ICAN events for 70th Anniversary

August 12, 2015

So many different events were organised by ICAN partners and campaigners all over the world to commemorate the 70th Anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that it is almost impossible to list them all! Demonstrations, seminars, Hibakusha lectures and tours, concerts, fasts, and more. That’s not to mention the outpouring of support on social media, inspiring articles, op-eds, interviews etc… which have combined to highlight together with the memory of the bombings, the legal gap concerning nuclear weapons and the urgent need to ban them because of their terrible consequences on people and their environment.
The media spotlight on the anniversaries around the world has challenged the myths around the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and made reference to the humanitarian pledge and the whole humanitarian initiative. This anniversary has also been a good opportunity for personalities like Hans Blix, religious leaders like Pope Francis or members of governments like the Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan to call for a ban treaty.

Check out the list below for an overview of the actions.
